Wireless Bridge FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

The following are a series of questions that are frequently asked by customers when looking to implement a wireless bridge:

What is a Wireless Bridge?
A wireless bridge is a hardware component used to connect two or more network segments (LANs or parts of a LAN) which are physically separated. Many wireless routers and wireless access points offer either a "bridge" mode or a "repeater" mode, both of which perform a similar function. Wireless routers, access points, and bridges are available that utilize each of the commonly used wireless frequencies (used in the wireless-B, wireless-A (and -G), and wireless-N standards). The frequency bands for these wireless standards can be used license-free in most countries. Wireless bridge devices work in pairs (point-to-point), one on each side of the "bridge". However, there can be many simultaneous "bridges" using one central device (point to multipoint). (extract from Wikipedia)

What speeds are acheivable?
Wireless bridge speeds are typically reported as "over the Air" speeds, which often do not relate to the actual throughput of the equipment. For example a typical 802.11a 5Ghz wireless bridge that operates at 54mbps will achieve an average of 22mbps data throughput. If you are looking for a standards based solution you will typically get 22mbps, for manufacturers that have their own propriety system data rates of up to 1Gbps FULL duplex is achievable. (BridgeWave) Motorola have the most diverse of products supporting data rates of 25, 52, 105, 150 and 300mbps.

QoS - Any Quality of Service?
QoS or Quality of Service is typically handled either side of a wireless bridge, typically at teh switch level. The most common QoS that is perfromed is 802.1p which prioitises VLAN's.

Which frequency should be used?
Wireless bridges typically operate in a few frequency ranges including 2.4Ghz, 5.4Ghz, 5.8Ghz and 80Ghz. Your specific requirements will dictate which frequency you will use but typically most bridges operate in the 5.8Ghz range in the UK.

Do i need a licience to operate a wireless bridge?
Depending on the frequency that you use you may require a "light" liciense from Ofcom. If you are looking to operate int eh 5.8Ghz or 80Ghz then you will be requited to obtain a liciense.
